    NC Alzheimer’s Support Program

    The NC Alzheimer's Support Program provides outreach, advocacy, education and training to individuals with dementia, their families, health care professionals and the general public. The program also provides research support, consultation and technical assistance to the Aging Services Network and local providers to enable them to develop, implement and manage home and community-based programs and services that support Alzheimer's families throughout the state. The NC Alzheimer's Support Program aims to strengthen the capacity of informal and professional caregivers through a menu of services that includes evidence-based interventions and best practices, with a view to improve long term care for people with dementia resulting in quality treatment in the home by families and the best possible care by professionals who are equipped through training, knowledge and community support.

    The NC Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) has been involved in Alzheimer's Support since 1984. The Division was initially responding to a U.S. Administration on Aging initiative to involve State Units on Aging in the development of services for Alzheimer's families. DAAS receives an annual allocation of funds from the NC General Assembly for Alzheimer's Support Program activities. The amount of this State appropriation has remained the same for over twenty years. The core services provided through the NC Alzheimer’s Support Program are, and will continue to be, a critical part of meeting the needs of a rapidly growing Alzheimer's population.

    The NC Alzheimer’s Support Program intends to build community capacity to improve the quality of life for people affected by dementia through a coordinated network of supportive services available through the Duke Family Support Program and State Alzheimer's Association Chapters. These organizations provide expertise and a variety of resources to help North Carolina residents better understand Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and prepare for the responsibilities of caregiving.

    The Duke Family Support Program provides research support and expert consultation and technical assistance in State program and policy development and statewide implementation of evidence-based caregiver interventions and best practices. The goal is to ensure access to the most comprehensive, current and accurate information on dementia care research and best practices for caregiver support by providing a technical assistance clearinghouse and linkage to specialized consultation and resource development to enhance the quality, effectiveness and reach of State programs. The Duke Family Support Program has developed and distributed numerous educational products to assist both professionals and families with dementia care. This program gained national and international recognition for its work and evidence-based expertise. Its link to the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Duke University makes the Duke Family Support Program a highly valuable asset to the residents of North Carolina. Visit the Duke Family Support Program web site for a list of additional services and educational resources.

    Duke Alzheimer’s Support Program activities include:

    • Developing and implementing innovative and specialized training materials and presentations on dementia care research and caregiver support including an annual education and research conference in collaboration with the Duke Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center;

    • Providing consultation and technical assistance to DAAS in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based Alzheimer's interventions and best practices for caregiver support;

    • Linking families from areas with limited resources to local research opportunities and the services of the Duke Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, Duke Memory Disorders Clinics or other local diagnostic and treatment centers with specialized dementia expertise.
