NC Flex Enrollment

Why do I need to enroll?

This is a voluntary program to help you save tax dollars. By having some expenses that you would ordinarily have to pay out of your net pay taken out of your paycheck before taxes are deducted, you will have more "take-home pay". It is a great benefit because it reduces your taxable income, decreasing the amount of your paycheck that is taxed.

For more information, visit the NC Flex web site.

Who can enroll in NCFlex?

You may enroll if you are working 20 hours or more per week in a permanent, probationary, or time-limited position. (Graduate students working as teaching assistants or research assistants are not eligible.)

What plans are offered under NCFlex?

NCFlex is a program of pre-tax benefit plans, including the following plans:

  • Pre-tax Reimbursement Accounts:
    1. Health Care Flexible Spending Account
    2. Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account
  • Pre-tax Insurance:
    1. Vision Care Plan
    2. Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
    3. Dental Plan
    4. Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance
    5. Cancer Insurance
    6. Critical Illness

How do I enroll in the NCFlex plan(s)?

You may enroll online using the Employee Self-Service (ESS) Portal in BEACON or fill out the NCFlex Enrollment Form. If you are a new employee, you must enroll within 30 days of your start date.

Talk to your HR Representative for more information about how to enroll online.

When do the payroll deductions take effect?

Participation begins the first day of the month after you enroll—that is your effective date of coverage and you can submit any claims beginning with your effective date of coverage.

How many of the NCFlex benefits plans may I enroll in?

You may enroll in none, one or all of the benefit plans. For more information, be sure to visit the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more detailed plan information.

How are my contributions withheld?

All of your contributions for NCFlex benefits are made through payroll deduction, prior to taxes being withheld.

What is the Health Care Flexible Spending Account?

This reimbursement account allows you to prepay a set amount each month through payroll deduction to cover your anticipated medical expenses that qualify for reimbursement. The Health Care Flexible Spending Account information gives you examples of how this can save you money by setting aside money from your pay before it is taxed to pay medical expenses. You'll need to be careful in estimating your medical expenses, though, because you must submit valid expenses for at least that amount during the year to avoid losing money.

This information also gives you:

  • More tips on how to avoid overestimating your expenses,
  • How to submit expenses for reimbursement and
  • How to sign up for and use the optional "Convenience Card" (available in the open enrollment period) to draw directly from your prepaid account to pay certain covered expenses.

To enroll, list your monthly contribution amount on the enrollment form or online using the Employee Self- Service (ESS) Portal in BEACON.

How do I know which health care expenses are covered?

You will need to consult the list of eligible health care expenses. For more information, visit the Health Care Flexible Spending Account worksheet.

What is the Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account?

This account allows you to prepay and be reimbursed with pre-tax dollars for child care (or dependent adult care) expenses that you pay regularly. To enroll online, list your monthly contribution amount using the Employee Self-Service (ESS) Portal in BEACON. Be careful not to overestimate your expenses, because you must use at least that amount for day care during the year to avoid losing money. The maximum you can contribute is $5,000 per year.

How do I know which dependent day care expenses are covered?

You will need to consult the list of eligible dependent day care expenses. For more information, visit the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide.

What is the NCFlex Vision Care Plan?

The NCFlex Vision Care Plan, administered by Superior Vision Services, offers three options:

  • Plan 1 — with vision exam and materials
  • Plan 2 — with materials only
  • Plan 3 — with enhanced vision exam and materials

Consider the options very carefully and consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.

What is the Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment Plan?

The Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance plan is underwritten by A.C. Newman and Company on the behalf of Gerber Life Insurance company (Gerber). The plan can pay a benefit if you suffer a loss as the result of a covered accident while you are insured under the plan. It also pays a benefit if you suffer certain disabling injuries while covered. Consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.

What is the NCFlex Dental Plan?

The NCFlex Dental Plan is administered by United Concordia. The plan offers two options: High Option and Low Option. Consider both options very carefully and consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.

What is the Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance?

Term life insurance pays a benefit to your beneficiary(ies) when you die. If you enroll in this plan the first time it is offered to you as a new employee, you may select coverage on a guaranteed basis up to $100,000 without providing "Evidence of Insurability". Consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.

What is the Cancer Insurance?

Cancer Insurance is a comprehensive plan that provides
coverage if you are diagnosed with certain types of
cancer. This coverage is in addition to any medical or
disability insurance you have in place. Consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.

What is the NC Flex Critical Illness Plan?

The NC Flex Critical Illness Plan is administered by Met Life and complements your existing medical coverage, if you have any, but does not replace it. The coverave pays a lump-sum payment when a covered person experiences a covered condition, such as cancer, bone-marrow transplant, heart attack, stroke, coronary artery bypass graft, heart transplant, major organ transplant or kidney failure. If you enroll in this plan the first time it is offered to you as a new employee, you may select coverage on a guaranteed basis up to $100,000 without providing Evidence of Insurability. Consult the NC Flex Benefits Enrollment Guide for more details.
